Proyectos educativos multidisciplinares y ayuda a la comunidad

2019

This paper relates an experience carried out at a higher education setting, specifically involving 3rd-year students in the Early Childhood Education degree programme. In relation to this, the paper presents an educational model that takes into account the need to develop ethical and social competences and gives importance to interdisciplinary education in real contexts. To this aim, all the academic modules that form part of this degree programme devote 25% of their teaching time and evaluation to the development of an interdisciplinary project. This paper will describe one of these projects, entitled "Solve a real problem", the design of which is informed by service-learning and problem-b…

Expanding Possibilities: Project Work Using ICT

2005

One of the main findings from the SITES Module 2 study internationally is the increased use of project work connected to the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in many countries around the world. The Norwegian cases presented in this article support these findings, showing that when teachers and students use ICT in school settings, it is most often part of project work. However, there is a need to analyze to a larger degree the project work using ICT. In this article, project work using ICT is analyzed firstly by studying the changes in learning environment that the technology represents or as a catalyst for physical changes in the spaces in schools. Secondly, project …

“How Real People Really Need Mathematics in the Real World”—Authenticity in Mathematics Education

2018

This paper discusses authenticity from the perspective of mathematics education. Often, school mathematics offers students inauthentic word problems, which don’t show the authentic usefulness of mathematics in real life. In some tasks, authentic aspects are combined with inauthentic ones (e.g., an authentic context, but the question is artificial and different from what people within that context would ask). Several studies show that students are more motivated by authentic questions than by authentic contexts. Embedding these findings, I discuss issues associated with defining authenticity in education. A first issue is that philosophers use the term to characterize a person’s existential …

Open-ended projects opened up — aspects of openness

2017

Abstract—One of the most important areas of competence for professional engineers is the ability to function well in project work, in particular they need to be able to efficiently solve open-ended problems in different collaborative settings. The development of this ability is however not prominent in engineering education despite numerous authors suggesting openended problems as a pedagogical tool to promote development of collaborative problem solving competence by including elements of group or project work in courses. In our own long experience of using open-ended problems in collaborative student projects, we have identified a lack of systematic progression in learning outcomes and sk…
